I see Heaven’s glories shine,
And Faith shines equal, arming me from Fear.”

As if Rand Paul’s flippant “No one will miss a hill or two” comment wasn’t egregious enough, his latest PR effort on behalf of the coal industry is even worse. In an interview with Details magazine, he makes some of the dumbest and most offensive statements I’ve heard yet about mountaintop removal.
See, here’s what Rand Paul thinks. Seriously.
Paul believes mountaintop removal just needs a little rebranding. “I think they should name it something better,” he says. “The top ends up flatter, but we’re not talking about Mount Everest. We’re talking about these little knobby hills that are everywhere out here. And I’ve seen the reclaimed lands. One of them is 800 acres, with a sports complex on it, elk roaming, covered in grass.” Most people, he continues, “would say the land is of enhanced value, because now you can build on it.”

Your senators need to hear from you! They need to know that Americans haven’t forgotten about this critical issue and support efforts to reduce the risk of nuclear weapons. Let your senators know that a safer world STARTs with this simple step-encourage them to ratify START today.

“Just being alive
It can really hurt.
These moments given
Are a gift from time.
Just let us try
To give these moments back
To those we love
To those who will survive.”

The debate over the New START arms control treaty with Russia is winding down. Senate committees have held nearly 20 hearings, and treaty opponents are now repeating the same tired arguments that have already been thoroughly debunked and discredited. With the debate over START largely exhausted, Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has moved to schedule a committee vote for next week. If passed, the treaty will go to the Senate floor, where it will need 67 votes to be ratified. The efforts by those opposing the treaty — like Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK), former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney, and the Heritage Foundation — to rally Republican opposition seem to have largely failed with few GOP Senators arguing against the merits of the treaty. A growing number of Republican senators have now expressed hope that the treaty can be ratified. But instead of expressing their intention to vote for the treaty, many of these senators — including Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee — are now demanding backroom deals to get more pork for the home states’ nuclear weapons bureaucracy — something that should have absolutely nothing to do with START. Having vigorously attacked side deals during the health care debate, these Senators are now engaging in their own sunbelt shakedown. In the midst of complaining about government spending, they are demanding wasteful pork that would have the United States absurdly spending vastly greater sums on its nuclear infrastructure, when it is planning to significantly reduce its nuclear stockpiles. Senators should not put pork and politics over American nuclear security, and the White House should resist efforts to succumb to such blackmail.

“There’s no time for us
There’s no place for us
What is this thing that builds our dreams yet slips away
from us
Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever….?
There’s no chance for us
It’s all decided for us
This world has only one sweet moment set aside for us
Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?
Who dares to love forever?
When love must die
But touch my tears with your lips
Touch my world with your fingertips
And we can have forever
And we can love forever
Forever is our today
Who wants to live forever
Who wants to live forever?
Forever is our today
Who waits forever anyway?”

“It’s a kind of magic
It’s a kind of magic
A kind of magic
One dream one soul, one prize
One goal, one golden glance of what should be
It’s a kind of magic
One shaft of light that shows the way
No mortal man can win this day
It’s a kind of magic
The bell that rings inside your mind
Is challenging the doors of time
It’s a kind of magic
The waiting seems eternity
The day will dawn of sanity
Is this a kind of magic?
It’s a kind of magic
There can be only one
This rage that lasts a thousand years
Will soon be done
This flame that burns inside of me
I’m here in secret harmonies
It’s a kind of magic
The bell that rings inside your mind
Is challenging the doors of time
It’s a kind of magic
It’s a kind of magic
This rage that lasts a thousand years
Will soon be, will soon be
Will soon be done
This is a kind of magic
There can be only one
This rage that lasts a thousand years
Will soon be done
Magic – it’s a kind of magic
It’s a kind of magic
Magic, magic, magic, magic
It’s magic
It’s a kind of magic”

Here we belong, fighting to survive
In a world with the darkest powersHey…
And here we are
We’re the princes of the universe
Here we belong, fighting for survival

Known among fans for its distinctive red eye-like camera lens, its quiet yet unnerving tone of voice, and its affinity for USC football, BCS, or Binary Crossplatform Subnet system, is believed to have discovered the attempt to deactivate it by reading the lips of employees Dave Bowman and Frank Poole. A review of security tapes showed that Bowman and Poole entered one of the building’s soundproofed offices to discuss how they could stop the supercomputer’s recent string of inexplicable malfunctions, which include awarding the National Championship to more than one team, giving preference to schools from major conferences, and somehow eliminating undefeated teams from contention.
However, Bowman and Poole were evidently unaware that along with BCS 9000’s ability to recognize speech, decode facial expressions, observe emotion, appreciate art, decide which teams compete in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, and play chess, the machine is also capable of interpreting mouth movements and extrapolate speech patterns from afar.
BCS responded to the threat by overriding the building’s manual controls and causing Poole’s elevator to suddenly plummet 350 feet as he rode to the roof to fix the computer’s antenna. In addition, BCS 9000 removed all the oxygen from the Bowl Championship Series break room and terminated the life functions of three officials who were sleeping in their hibernacula.

First there was the bizarre AFP report asking where all the oil in the Gulf could have possibly gone. Then a breaking news alert from the New York Times landed in my inbox Tuesday night declaring “Gulf of Mexico Oil Slick Appears to Vanish Quickly,” which seemed to imply that because a few reporters hadn’t noticed much crude on a flyover, it must have magically disappeared. (The alert failed to mention the 1.8 million gallons of dispersant that BP dumped on the spill to do exactly that).

“Can.. (anybody find me somebody to love?)
(ooh…)
ooh…
Each morning I get up, I die a little
Can’t barely stand on my feet
Take a look in the mirror and cry
(Take a look at yourself, in the mirror, and cry! Yeah, yeah)
Lord what you’re doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
(ooh, ooh believing you)
But I just can’t get no relief, Lord!
(I just can’t get no relief, Lord!)
Somebody, (somebody), ooh somebody (somebody)
Can anybody find me -
(anybody find me)
Somebody to love?
Yeah..
I work (he works hard) every day of my life
I work till I ache my bones
At the end (At the end of the day)
I take home
my hard earned pay all on my own
(goes home, goes home on his own)
I get down (down) on my knees (knees)
And I start to pray (praise the Lord!)
Till the tears run down from my eyes, Lord!
(ooh, ooh, ooh Lord!)
Somebody (somebody), ooh somebody! (please)
Can anybody find me -
(Can anybody find me)
Somebody to loooooooove?
(He works hard)
Everyday (everyday)
And I try and I try and I try
(I try and I try and I try)
But everybody wants to put me down
(ooooooh)
They say I’m goin’ crazy
(ooooooh)
They say I got a lot of water in my brain
(aaaaah)
I got no common sense
I got nobody left to believe
(He’s got nobody left to believe)
(Yeah yeah yeah yeah)
(Ooh, Lord)
Oh Somebody, ooh (somebody)
Anybody find me
(Anybody find me)
Somebody to love?
(Can, anybody, find me, someone to love?)
Got no feel, I got no rhythm
I just keep losing my beat (you just keep losing, and losing)
I’m ok, I’m alright (he’s alright, he’s alright)
I ain’t gonna face no defeat (yeah, yeah)
I just gotta get out of this prison cell
(ooh, ooh, this prison cell)
Some day I’m gonna be free, Lord!
(One day I’m gonna be free, Lord!)
(Find me somebody to love)
(Find me somebody to love)
oh, oh, oh, oooh
(Find me somebody to love)
(Find me somebody to love)
find me, find me, find me
(Find me somebody to love)
(Find me somebody to love)
(Find me somebody to love)
ooh find me somebody to love
(Find me somebody to lo-o-ove)
(Find me somebody to love)
ooo-ooo-ooo-ooo-oooh
(Find me somebody to love)
(Somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody, find me somebody, find me somebody to love)
Can anybody find me
(Can anybody find me)
Somebody to…. loooovve?
(Find me, somebody to-o-o love)
ooooooh
(Find me, somebody to-o-o love)
Find me somebody, somebody, somebody, somebody to love
(Find me, somebody to-o-o love)
Find me, find me, find me, find me, find me, ooooh -
(Find me, somebody to-o-o love)
Somebody to looooove oo-oo-oo-ooh
(Find me, somebody to-o-o love)
Find me, find me, find me, somebody to love
(Find me, somebody to-o-o love)
Anybody, anywhere, anybody find me somebody to love oh, oh, oh, oh
(Find me, somebody to-o-o love)

“With wide-embracing love
Thy Spirit animates eternal years,
Pervades and broods above,
Changes, sustains, dissolves, creates, and rears.
Though earth and moon were gone,
And suns and universes ceased to be,
And Thou wert left alone,
Every existence would exist in Thee.
There is not room for Death,
Nor atom that his might could render void:
Thou — THOU art Being and Breath,
And what THOU art may never be destroyed.”

But the main reason is simply this: at some point, the country is going to have to raise revenues to fix the deficit. And cap-and-trade, if done the right way — if permits are sold, rather than given away to the industry — can produce quite a lot of revenues: $145 billion per year initially, the CBO estimated in 2008, with the number rising much faster than inflation as emissions targets become continually more stringent.
